Surface subgroups in dimension 3

Résumé : A fundamental unsolved problem in low-dimensional topology is whether every cocompact Kleinian group contains the fundamental group of a closed orientable surface of positive genus. I will outline the proof of this conjecture for arithmetic Kleinian groups, and more generally Kleinian groups that contain finite non-cyclic subgroups. This draws on a variety of techniques, including the topology of 3-orbifolds, the spectrum of the Laplacian, and new perturbation results for discrete subgroups of Lie groups.
