The scaling limit of non-integrable Ising models

Abstract:
We consider finite range perturbations of the 2D Ising model in cylindrical geometry. We show that at Tc the rescaled multipoint energy correlations converge to a well defined limit as the lattice mesh tends to zero. This scaling limit is the same as the one for nearest neighbor Ising, up to a finite multiplicative renormalization constant, independent of the shape of the domain. The proof is based on a representation of the generating function of correlations in terms of a non-Gaussian Grassmann integral, and a constructive Renormalization Group analysis thereof. Two novelties, compared with previous works, are :
(1) proof that the scaling dimension of boundary operators is better by one dimension
than their bulk counterparts ;
(2) control of the marginal boundary terms, thanks to a cancellation mechanism based
on an approximate image rule for the fermionic Green's function.

Dynamics in topological insulators

Abstract:
Topological insulators are materials that block conduction along their interior but support extraordinarily robust currents along their boundary.
I will first review the bulk-edge correspondence, an index-like theorem that explains the stability of currents.
I will then present a research project that aims to quantitatively describe these currents in the semiclassical regime.

On

Energy asymptotics in the three-dimensional Brezis–Nirenberg problem

Abstract:
In this talk, we consider the Brezis–Nirenberg minimization problem
S(a + ε V) = inf ∫Ω(|∇u|2 + (a + ε V )|u|2)dx, where the minimum is taken over the functions u∈ H10(Ω) such that Ω u6dx=1. Here Ω is a 3-dimensional bounded open set, and the potential a is critical in the sense of Hebey and Vaugon.
Under certain quasi-optimal assumptions on a and V we compute the asymptotics of S(a+ε V)-S when as ε→ 0, where S is the Sobolev constant. Minimizers for S(a+ε V) concentrate at a point in the zero set of the Robin function associated to Δ+ a, and we determine the possible locations of the concentration point within that set.
Since our approach is purely variational, it also applies to almost minimizers of S(a+ε V).
We will also discuss analogous results for higher dimensions N ≥4, and for non-minimizing solutions of the equation Δu + (a+ε V)u = u5 in dimension N = 3.

Construction of quasimodes for non-selfadjoint operators under finite-type dynamical conditions

Abstract:
I will present new results on the study of pseudospectra of non-selfadjoint operators. As it is well known, the precise knowledge of the distribution of the spectrum of a non-normal Schrödinger operator is not always enough to obtain proper estimates on the resolvent (contrary to the self-adjoint case), which is essential, for instance, to obtain optimal decay rates for the energy of solutions to the associated evolution problem. A more suitable object of study in this framework is the pseudo-spectrum, given by the set of points of the complex plane where the resolvent is asymptotically very large, which are not necessarily close to true spectral values.
Using recent developments on propagation of Hagedorn wave-packets by non-Hermitian quadratic operators, we give new constructions of quasimodes reaching points of the complex plane at the boundary of the pseudospectrum under finite-type dynamical conditions. This results in obtaining sharp estimates on the resolvent, and showing new examples of operators for which the spectrum is asymptotically deep inside the pseudospectrum. Particularly, we observe this phenomenon in non-selfadjoint subprincipal perturbations of systems of semiclassical harmonic oscillators.

Adiabatic theorems and linear response in the thermodynamic limit

Abstract:
I will present a new adiabatic theorem for systems of interacting fermions on a lattice that holds in the thermodynamic limit and discuss its implications for a rigorous justification of linear response theory and Kubo’s formula at zero temperature. In particular, the theoretical understanding of the quantum Hall effect rests on the validity of Kubo’s formula for such systems.

Eigenfunction concentration on polyhedra

Abstract:
In this talk I will describe some properties of the high-energy probability distribution of a quantum particle in an n-dimensional polyhedron. More precisely, I will show that in the high-energy limit, with non-zero probability such a particle is found in a neighbourhood of the (n-1)-skeleton of the polyhedral boundary. This is a first result of this kind for n > 2, previously known results being in the polygonal n = 2 case.

On the dynamical side, the proof is based on studying the closed orbits of the billiard flow, which come in “periodic tubes”, while on the analytical side, we take microlocal limits in phase space of Laplace eigenfunctions (semiclassical measures), and prove control theoretic estimates for eigenfunctions in these periodic tubes.

On the stability of equilibria for infinitely many quantum particles

Abstract:
We study the evolution of a system of infinitely many quantum particles. Instead of the usual Hartree equation for density matrices, we consider the following equivalent model, proposed by de Suzzoni, of a Hartree type equation but for a random field:
 iXt=-ΔX + (w*E(|X|2))X.
Here X is a random field on [0,T]xRd, and w is the pair interaction potential. This equation admits equilibria which are random Gaussian fields whose laws are invariant by time and space translations. They are hence not localised and represent an infinite number of particles. We give a stability result under certain hypotheses, by showing that
small perturbations scatter to linear waves as the time goes to plus or minus infinity. This gives another point of view for this problem that was previously studied on the side of density matrices by Lewin-Sabin (then Chen-Hong-Pavlovic and recently Pusateri-Sigal).
This is joint work with de Suzzoni.

How Lagrangian states evolve into random waves

Abstract:
In 1977, Berry conjectured that eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on manifolds of negative curvature behave, in the high-energy (or semiclassical) limit, as a random superposition of plane waves. This conjecture, central in quantum chaos, is still completely open.
In this talk, we will consider a much simpler situation. On a manifold of negative curvature, we will consider a Lagrangian state associated to a generic phase. We show that, when evolved during a long time by the Schrödinger equation, these functions do behave, in the semiclassical limit, as a random superposition of plane waves.

Towers of bubbles for critical stationary Schrödinger equations in large dimensions

Abstract:
In this talk we consider perturbations of critical stationary Schrödinger equations, such as Yamabe-type equations on manifolds, or Brézis-Nirenberg-type equations on bounded open sets. We are interested in the blow-up behavior of such equations; in particular in how blowing-up solutions may develop « multi-bubble blow-up », that is how several interacting concentrating peaks may appear.

In dimensions larger than 7, on a locally conformally flat manifold, we construct positive blowing-up solutions of such equations that behave like towers of bubbles concentrating at a critical point of the mass function. The result does not assume any symmetry on the underlying manifold. The construction is performed by combining finite-dimensional reduction methods with a linear bubble-tree analysis. Our approach works both in the positive and sign-changing case: as a byproduct of our analysis we prove the existence, on a generic bounded open set of Rn, of blowing-up solutions of the Brézis-Nirenberg equation that behave like towers of bubbles of alternating signs.
