To any dominant rational selfmap of an algebraic variety one can associate an invariant known as the (first) dynamical degree. It is of fundamental importance to both complex and arithmetic dynamics. When computable, it tends to be an algebraic number, but I will present joint work with Bell, Diller, and Krieger, in which we give examples of birational maps with transcendental dynamical degrees.
